Mr. Morbid’s Moonlight Movie Madness Mayhem Massacre and MORE

That’s a lot of ‘M’s. And here’s another one: MAN, I love living in Austin, Texas. There’s always some new weird and cool thing around the corner (or hiding under the bed) to discover. Case in point…Mr Morbid’s Movie Massacre (shortened to keep myself from coming down with Carpal Tunnel.

MisterMorbid

The Institution Theater, at 3708 Woodbury Dr. in Austin has a whole slew of cool October stuff on their plate, not the least of which is Mr. Morbid, described thusly:

Meet Mortimer Morbid, a quaint small-town mortician by day, a fright flick TV host by night …or so he would hope. Try as he might, he cannot seem to avoid the mishaps that continually block his line-up of B-grade horror schlock. Luckily, he has friends on hand to play out their best rendition of what they think the movie might have looked like. With the help of Austin’s best and most distinct improv troupes, bizarre trailers of substandard gore and terror are unspooled into feature-length ridiculousness every Friday in October at 10pm.

That’s ten smackers to get in for a LOT of bizarre and gruesome hilarity, perfect for your Halloweeny month. But that’s not all…

On Saturdays in October at 8pm, the Institution Theater presents, “Risen: Improvised Stories in World War Z”. For only 12 bucks you get this:

Risen

The power has gone out. Panic has hit the streets. Throughout the world, humans are being beaten back by a new terror…Zombies. This is the world of RISEN, inspired by the best-selling novel World War Z by Max Brooks, but improvised far past where it leaves off. Each week will show you the zombie apocalypse from a different geological perspective: the South African slums, the Paris underground, the upscale apartments of Manhattan. Guest monologists will perform post-apocalyptic stories of survival, decimation, or worse. From there the all-star cast of improvisers will flesh out that part of the world before its too late. Through the panic of the outbreak, to the front lines of the Z War and back again, Risen will give a glimpse into the darkest parts of humanity imaginable.

But wait…that’s not all. When you’re done envisioning the end of humanity at the hands and jaws of the world’s most popular monsters, the Institution Theater gives you a reason to stay in your seats with Weirdsville USA…

Weirdsville

There are things out there: paranormal, extra-terrestrial, and other unexplained events. Bill Belpre is the host of Weirdsville, USA, a syndicated paranormal radio talk show that gathers the truthful eyewitness accounts of everything from alien abduction to the afterlife and back. However, Bill is at a turning point. He’s dedicated his life to finding the truth behind these phenomena, but each question answered opens the floodgate for more questions. The weight of knowing (or not knowing) so much truth has him apprehensive beyond the relief of the stress reducing supplements that sponsor his show. In a desperate attempt to calm himself, he’s trying something new – Improv Comedy. He’s joined in the studio by his improv troupe and local chapter of The Truth Seekers Society who will decode the unusual stories in grounded comedy scenes.

Weirdsville starts at 10 pm and only costs ten dollars.

Music Mondays at Free +1 at Museum of the Weird

It’s Monday, so that means the Alamo Ritz will be featuring their specialty event “Music Mondays” where at 10 pm for 5 bucks they show a music-related feature, along with weekly food and drink specials. Why are we posting about this on Museum of the Weird? Because we’re just down the street, and if you show up early (make sure you’ve got at least an hour to kill), pick up your ticket, you can show it to the staff and if you buy a ticket to the museum, a friend can get in for free with you!

This week’s film is “The Past is a Grotesque Animal”, a documentary about the front man for the band “Of Montreal”.

WIZARD WORLD COMIC CON TODAY… MYSTERY ANNOUNCEMENT!

MOTW-2013-11-23-Wizard_World_1

Having just returned from the first two-week long vacation I’ve had in a while, I’m feeling refreshed, rejuvenated and looking forward to the exciting news I’m going to announce today at Wizard World Comic Con!

I and my fellow Museum of the Weird sideshow performers Blockhead Benny and Obi-Juan Martinez will be in attendance hosting a special panel at 5:00pm today in Exhibition Hall F. I’ll be showing off artifacts from the Museum’s collection, talking about the Minnesota Iceman, and signing copies of my new Museum of the Weird comic!

And I’ve got an electrifying announcement for all fans of science fiction, fantasy and horror (or as I like to call it, “sfanthor,” a term I coined with my short entries into this year’s Fantastic Fest Film Festival). If you live in the Austin area and you’re a fan of these film genres, you’re going to want to be there!

Whether you’ve already got your wristbands or are planning on going (or you’re just now hearing about it), Wizard World is a ton of fun for fans of not only comics but practically everything from our pop culture. Everyone should go at least once if you’ve never been, and this year’s convention seems to be the one to attend. Just look at who’ll be there!

Stan Lee, Bruce Campbell AND Captain Kirk under one roof? My brain’s gonna explode!

THE AUSTINOT INTERVIEWS MUSEUM OF THE WEIRD’S STEVE BUSTI

Austinot.com's Dave Thomas (left) with Museum of the Weird owner Steve Busti
Austinot.com’s Dave Thomas (left) with Museum of the Weird owner Steve Busti

We had a great article written about us by David Thomas today for the popular Austin blog austinot.com. If you’re not familiar with the Museum of the Weird, this is a great preview of some of the things you might find here!

Austin is weird, right? It’s how we’ve branded the city.

We’ve all seen the tie-dye shirts, but how weird is Austin really? Is it mermaid mummy weird? Is it shrunken head weird? The Museum of the Weird on 6th St. is that weird.

The Iceman Cometh

When Steve Busti was just a young lad, he went with his aunt to a K-Mart. In the parking lot was a man with a truck, taking money from a line of people as they peeked into the back of it.

Steve’s aunt paid the man and lifted Steve up so he could see into the back of the truck. He came face to face with the world famous Minnesota Iceman – an ape-man frozen in ice, of controversial origin, which has attracted the attention of the FBI, Smithsonian Museum, U.S. Customs and Vice President Walter Mondale. The world famous moniker is not hype. The Iceman has attracted the attention of international paleontologists and scientists.

First impressions are important. If Steve Busti had never met the Iceman, I may not be writing this story. “If I hadn’t seen the Iceman at such a young age, I’d probably be an accountant or lawyer or something and there would be no Museum of the Weird,” Steve said with a grin. It’s interesting how things work out.

Steve and his wife opened Lucky Lizard Curios and Gifts in 2005. “It’s a reflection of both our personalities,” he informed me. “She has locally made jewelry and I have my oddities.”

The museum grew from there. Steve took advantage of the extra space in the back of the store and above it, and he’s slowly amassed an impressive collection over the last eight years, with his most prized possession being the Iceman. Steve’s acquisition of the Iceman has gained the attention of national media outlets like The Huffington Post.

FLASHBACK COMICS RETURNS WITH “MUSEUM OF THE WEIRD” COMIC BOOK!

Flashback Comics logo

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: FLASHBACK COMICS RETURNS WITH MUSEUM OF THE WEIRD!

Steve Busti, owner of the world-famous Museum of the Weird in Austin, Texas,  proudly announces the relaunch of Busti’s original comic book company from the 90’s, Flashback Comics, with their first new title in almost 20 years: Museum of the Weird!

Busti is returning to the comics industry, where he got his start in 1994, with a new comic series inspired by his own acclaimed tourist attraction in Texas.  He says the stories will be along the lines of an anthology, inspired by individual exhibits in the museum’s collection, but tied together by a cast of characters, including none other than a fictionalized version of Busti himself.

“The Museum of the Weird comic will have a heavy supernatural influence”, Busti says, “as well as deal with stories of  the fantastic and the unexplained, which includes delving into subjects such as aliens, ghosts and cryptozoology.”

The first issue, a special preview edition numbered #0, is available now at the Museum of the Weird’s gift shop, Lucky Lizard Curios & Gifts, and through their website, luckylizard.net.  It features original stories and art by Steve Busti, Lyle Blackburn and Eerie Eric. The series is planned to be available quarterly, with the next issue coming in early January 2014.

ATTEND THE UFO CONFERENCE IN GREENSBORO, NC THIS WEEKEND!

If anyone in the area of Greensboro has any interest in UFOs, I urge you to go attend this man’s UFO conference this weekend.

Kent Senter is a man racing against time.

The 59-year-old resident of Burlington, N.C., has terminal multiple myeloma, a cancer that attacks bone marrow. Despite that, this weekend, he’ll be focused on the number one item at the top of his bucket list: to organize, sponsor and host an international UFO conference.

It’s no easy task. Adding to the daily challenges of his illness, Senter has quickly pulled together an intriguing symposium over the past few months in a competitive climate where, between now and the end of the year, another dozen UFO-related conferences are scheduled around the U.S.

On June 29 and 30, 12 speakers — with backgrounds in science, military, academia, sociology, investigative journalism, including government officials of Chile and France — will come together for Senter’s 2013 Symposium On Official And Scientific Investigations Of Unidentified Aerial Phenomena, at the Greensboro War Memorial Auditorium in Greensboro, NC.

Help make this man’s dream come true!  Share this news with your friends, especially anyone in North Carolina.  And get out to the conference today or tomorrow. I wish I could be there, but I’d love to hear how it goes!

Kent and Patty Senter
Kent and Patty Senter. Kent has terminal cancer, and the UFO conference he has organized and is putting on this weekend is his dream come true. Go support him!

The Long Lost “Minnesota Iceman” Resurfaces… in Austin, Texas!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: The Long Lost “Minnesota Iceman” Resurfaces… in Austin, Texas!

Austin, TX (MUSEUM OF THE WEIRD) June 26, 2013 ––– Museum of the Weird owner Steve Busti announced today that the infamous “frozen caveman” exhibit that toured around the country in the late 60’s and early 70’s is currently in his possession and will be exhibited to the world once again in his Austin, Texas tourist attraction, just in time for the Fourth of July weekend.

The strange tale of the Minnesota Iceman begins in 1968. A carnival attraction then being billed as “The Siberskoye Creature” began showing up at malls and fairgrounds across America. Also known as “The Creature In Ice,” the exhibit appeared to be the body of a hairy Neanderthal or Bigfoot-like monster frozen in a solid block of ice inside a refrigerated coffin.

The “Iceman” soon garnered the attention of scientists, the Smithsonian Institution, and even the FBI, who all wanted to get their hands on the creature. Then, as suddenly as it appeared, the Iceman seemed to mysteriously vanish without a trace, and along with it all hopes of ever having the body thoroughly examined.

Over the ensuing decades the enigma of the Minnesota Iceman, as it were later to be called, became the subject of many books, lectures and television shows including Unsolved Mysteries and Animal X. The story grew to near legendary status among the generation that remembered seeing it, and for over three decades the mystery of whatever happened to it became as much an open question as whatever “IT” actually was.

Now, after many years of its whereabouts being unknown, the long enduring mystery of “Where is the Minnesota Iceman?” can finally be answered.

Busti is aiming to have the exhibit set up in his museum and open to the public by Wednesday, July 3, in time for the Fourth of July weekend.  Plans for a special Grand Opening Gala on Saturday, July 13th will take place in cooperation with eminent cryptozoology site Cryptomundo.com.

The Museum of the Weird is an homage to dime museums made popular by the likes of P.T. Barnum, and features everything from real mummies, shrunken heads and oddities, to wax figures of classic movie monsters, to live giant lizards.  They even boast a live sideshow on stage every day, where one can see magicians, sword-swallowers, human blockheads, and even an “elecrticity-proof” man.

In addition to the Minnesota Iceman taking up permanent residence at the Museum of the Weird however, Busti also plans to loan the Iceman for display to Loren Coleman’s International Cryptozoology Museum in Portland, Maine (cryptozoologymuseum.com) for a special future engagement in 2014. You can follow Coleman’s blog at cryptozoonews.com for forthcoming information.

Further details will be announced at a later date. In the meantime, you can find more information at http://www.museumoftheweird.com or by contacting Steve Busti at steve@museumoftheweird.com.
